In order to participate fully on our programmes, individuals should have a basic level of fitness at the time of departure.
By following our fitness training programme, it will give you the opportunity to reach a good level of fitness in a progressive manner prior to departing on expedition.
The training programme is based upon 3 key elements:
The ability to keep going for a protracted period of time. The basic building block for endurance training is running, but can be supported and complemented by both swimming and cycling.
Preparing the body for the rigours of expeditions. Conditioning for expedition requires the individual to practice carrying a pack and wearing boots for several hours at a time.
To develop the body’s core strength to help cope with both endurance and conditioning. The shoulders, back and legs are the key muscle groups to strengthen, but total body strength is encouraged through the use of resistance training.
At the point of signing up, you will be asked by your Programme Manager to work out your Body Mass Index (BMI). Please click below for an online calculator to help you achieve this. We will also ask you to retest this before departure. On your training courses, we will also ask you to take part in a "bleep test" in order for us to assess your progress.
